Zugfinder Train Delay Forecast Award

Design a new technology and win a prize!

Call for Participation

Zugfinder is seeking for scientists, geeks, and start-ups, to create the most promising forecast system for mid-term train delays. The target is to beat Zugfinder’s current system, which predicts the train delays based on the train number for the upcoming three days and has next day reliability of approx. 92%.

Target criteria

Zugfinder's forecast system is the benchmark for your system. It provides forecasts for the upcoming day with an accuracy of 92%. A delay forecast is considered accurate when it is matching the proper delay with a maximum difference of +/-10 minutes. So, you can beat the system in two different ways:

  1. Increasing the percentage of accuracy, while keeping the +/-10 minutes forecast range
  2. Reducing the forecast range (e.g. to +/-5 minutes), while keeping the accuracy percentage at 92%

Although the upcoming day is the benchmark, your system should generally be able to provide forecasts for the next 3 days.

How to design

There is no limitation in how the system is designed and implemented, as far as it can be deployed on a web server or in the Microsoft Azure platform. Underlying models can rely from simple heuristics to advanced statistical approaches or even complicated, cutting-edge AI algorithms. In order to create the system, Zugfinder will provide a vast amount of raw historical train delay data from all over Europe, mainly from Germany. It is recommended to deliver the system together with its documentation/a conference paper, written scientifically. The Award ceremony will take place during a virtual conference, where participants will present their findings and a demonstration of their working systems.

Scientific review

Conference papers will be reviewed and judged by a scientific committee. The best scientific paper will receive a special certificate.
